I went to one of my local lunch spots today and asked how’s business. The guy behind the counter said it’s been slow for the past two months. He cites everything getting more expensive. This got me thinking about the war in Iran and what Trump is up to.
The messaging from Trump has been clear: “Iran can’t have nukes”. Iran has been choking the straight of Hormuz and even damaging oil and gas facilities in the Middle East. They’re choking world’s energy supplies and now everyone around the globe is feeling it.
Iran having nukes – is that a problem?
Iran certainly uses the chant “Death to America” – so without thinking too deeply, it’s easy to see why Trump or the USA wouldn’t want Iran to have nuclear weapons.
But if we think about it deeper, Iran having nuclear weapons probably doesn’t mean they’re going to use them on the USA. Here’s why:
1. The US has had enemies with nuclear weapons for decades and they’ve never used them on us
I’m pretty sure if you talk to experts at geopolitics, nuclear weapons aren’t offensive weapons. They are deterrents. Countries that have nuclear weapons usually don’t get invaded or attacked. It’s believed that by having nuclear weapons you can keep bullies like the US away from attacking or invading your country. That’s most likely why Iran is trying to get nuclear weapons.
2. If Iran used a nuclear weapon on the US, Iran would be obliterated by the US
Let’s say Iran, finally got a nuclear weapon and decided to use it on US soil, the US would retaliate and make Iran uninhabitable. This is a terrible strategy for Iran and serves absolutely no purpose for them.
We can see now that Iran is really good at strategy, so they’re not going to do something impulsive and reckless just to give it to America.
What if Iran wanted to use a nuke on Israel and that’s the real reason?
I considered this scenario as well. Again, for the same reason as above, if Iran used a nuke on Israel, the US would obliterate Iran. Plus, it would kill Palestinians and Lebanese and make their homeland uninhabitable as well. Doesn’t make sense.
Am I in favor if Iran having nukes?
Not really. Simply because the world should be reducing the amount of nuclear weapons across the board and not increasing the inventory.
You know what would really help though? If the US wasn’t so aggressive – to the point where other nations feel the need to defend themselves by having a nuclear weapons program.
So what about the economy? Is all this Iran war worth it?
It sure doesn’t seem like it. This definitely seems like a huge blunder by the Trump administration. I guess the silver lining here is that now, more then ever, we should be less dependent on petroleum for energy needs.
