Basically, most of these low earth orbit satellites will break up in the atmosphere due to their orbital decay. When that happens, the chemical reactions that occur during re-entry result in ozone depletion.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SpaceX Is Conducting a Giant Chemical Experiment on Our Atmosphere Without Realizing\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oKK0dgDIxKY?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/seanvwork.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>With the large number of satellites being put into orbit these days (Starlink, for instance, is planning to put up 1 million satellites), we\u2019re going to accelerate the destruction of the ozone layer. Some people probably don&#8217;t know this, but in the late 1980s we had a pretty big emergency regarding the ozone layer. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/news\/how-uc-irvine-saved-ozone-layer\">We found out that CFCs from refrigerants and aerosol spray cans were causing a hole in the ozone layer<\/a>. Miraculously, the world got together to ban CFCs and saved the day. What a time to be alive\u2014meaning, the world could actually agree to work together to save mankind.<\/p>\n<h2>So Do We Ban Starlink and Other Mega-Constellation Satellite Arrays?<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps we don&#8217;t need to go that far. Maybe a solution can be found where either satellites are either made out of materials that don&#8217;t react with the ozone layer. Or (I&#8217;ll have to brush up on my orbital mechanics) perhaps satellites will be required to continually maintain a orbit by thrust adjustments or eject themselves into deep space. I&#8217;m sure that will eat into the costs of the project, but <em>we have to have an ozone layer<\/em>. There&#8217;s really no debate there. <\/p>\n<h2>Please Raise Awareness on This Issue<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s a huge deal. Right now it feels like it&#8217;s going unnoticed.
